For the first time in its history, the American Academy of Optometry has elected a member of the optical industry to lead the organization. Rick Weisbarth, O.D., vice president, North America Professional Services, for CIBA Vision, has been appointed president-elect of the organization.

Dr. Weisbarths term does not begin until January 1, 2007. In the meantime, Joe Yager, O.D., of Orlando, Fla., has assumed the position of president. Thomas L. Lewis, O.D., Ph.D., president of Pennsylvania College of Optometry, is immediate past president. Mark W. Eger, O.D., of Coraopolis, Pa., is secretary treasurer.

Newly elected board members are optometrists Brett G. Bence of Seattle, Bernard J. Dolan of San Francisco, Thomas F. Freddo of Boston, and Karla Zadnik of Columbus, Ohio.

Of Dr. Weisbarths election, Lois Schoenbrun, executive director of the Academy, says: Dr. Weisbarths election as president-elect of the Academy is welcome, and will not affect the Academys focus, as our goals and priorities are set by the entire Board and certainly by years of precedent. Dr. Weisbarth has always been especially good at recognizing and making clear what hat he is wearing when he speaks, and is an excellent role model in this regard for others who find themselves serving both an employer and a professional organization.
