Determined to report long-term motor and sensory outcomes after surgery for the nonaccommodative component of partially refractive accommodative esotropia (PRAET), a team of researchers found that nearly half of their patients achieved a successful ocular alignment.

This study evaluated 47 patients younger than 12 who were followed postoperatively for at least 10 years.

Through the follow-up period, the team discovered that 23 patients (49%) had surgical success, eight (18%) achieved stereopsis, 10 (21%) exhibited decompensation and seven (15%) developed esotropia with a high ratio of accommodative convergence to accommodation or consecutive exotropia. The researchers note that an older age at onset (2.87 ± 1.31 years) and a shorter duration of strabismus (≤4 years) were predictors for better stereopsis outcomes.
