Labor Day 2021

Holidays like Labor Day serve as an inflection point for me, reminding me of my youth, my family, getting ready for school and the promise of a bright future that each new year brought.

Those of you who know me well, know that I'm rarely at a loss for words. Today, looking back over past months, I honestly don't know what to say. I wish I had a better point of reference to look to that brighter future, but my concern over current events and the many challenges our country and the world face leave me hoping for the best, but increasingly expecting the worst. This is not new for a native New Yorker, but frankly, I never expected the magnitude of the problems we face today. Still, recognizing the challenges ahead is the first step in solving our problems and I remain hopeful that next Labor Day will be a better and brighter one for all of us.

With that said, the staff at Optometric Physician is taking the week off to spend the holiday with friends and family. Be safe and happy surrounded by those you care most about who care most about you. We'll do the same. See you next week! - GBA

Editors Note: I note with great sadness the passing of one of optometry’s greats. Last week, Dr. Harold Davis of the Chicago area, left us after an incredible life and career. Often at the forefront of optometry, Harold served as an example for the rest of us. He was a true visionary and early on saw what optometry could be. He led by example and was behind many of the great developments and innovations that shaped the profession going forward. Rob Davis, his son, is a dear friend and, in many ways much like his dad, pushing the profession forward with his wise counsel and generous nature. Our condolences to the Davis family. Harold Davis will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
