A Women In Optometry panel during SECO 2019 (February 20-24 in New Orleans) will feature three women who have cultivated their careers to suit them rather than slotted themselves into existing models. The three panelists for Finding the Right Fit are Barbara Horn, OD, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Carey Patrick, OD, of Allen, Texas, and Bridgitte Shen Lee, OD; of Houston, Texas.
Dr. Horn is currently president-elect of the American Optometric Association and will address how she crafted her working life to blend her interests in advocacy for the profession. Dr. Patrick, for whom optometry is a second career, will discuss the steps she took to return to school following her career in marketing and start out on such a dramatically different pathway as a solo practitioner. Dr. Shen Lee, who co-owns a private practice in Houston, Texas, also started an education company in 2011, iTravelCE, where she lectures on the latest eye care topics and leads CE programs all over Asia, sharing her interests in exploring global cultures with adventurous ODs.
These three women exemplify some of the trends seen as the optometric profession changes—in part because of the influx of women whose family and career demands have prompted many to adjust the typical model of practicing.
This will be the second year that Women In Optometry has been part of the SECO programming. The panel will be a part of the Wednesday evening OD and Allied Healthcare Professionals Symposium Dinner, with presentations by Hoya Vision Care and Women In Optometry. The dinner is free for SECO attendees, but advance registration is required. Register for SECO today.
